Chapter 12

There was a bubble of empty space around Danielle that Dom entered as confidently as he could. She was glaring at the art display at the far end of the barn, various paintings and collages of apples that were for sale. Only one had the sold sticker next to the title, Rotten. On the canvas maggots crawled over slices of apple on a plate like a horrific old-time still life. Dom suspected Danielle wasn’t even looking at the art.

“You all right?” he asked, and she jerked a little before turning to him. He refused to shy away from her glare.

“What do you want?” she asked, crossing her arms and turning her anger on a painting of a green apple with a face carved into it wearing a tuxedo.

“Thought someone should check on you after that,” said Dom, casual, the concerned and nosy gay man. He tried not to think about what Travis would think of this or how he’d want to use the opportunity. “I remember you from the Haunted House party. Dani, right?”

She glanced at him again, a little less angrily.

“I don’t need checking on.” She paused. “But thanks.”

Dom nodded and decided against offering to get another cider with her. It wasn’t a wise move to bring her back to where she’d just had a shouting match. He was glad Travis was currently spitefully moving all his things, or he might move in after Dom.

“It’s just hard,” said Danielle, shaking her head. “You think you know someone. And then…I heard he was blackmailing Karen. And now this.”

“It sucks to get cheated on,” said Dom. “Believe me, I know.”

Danielle sighed.

“Yeah, well, was he also blackmailing someone?”

“It was with his ex, if that counts. I had to take care of his kids.”

“People are shit,” said Danielle. “Anna and I were actually friends in middle school. I wouldn’t really kill her, you know.”

“Do you think she’d kill you?”

Danielle shot him a look. Apparently this was a question he shouldn’t be asking; Kiko would have known that. Dom hoped he hadn’t ruined it, but she started talking again after a moment.

“I don’t know anymore. Didn’t think she’d cheat on him with me, either. And she’s a damn good shot.” She paused. “But it’s hard to think of Anna killing anyone.”

“Maybe Spencer pissed her off,” said Dom, and Danielle let out a little laugh.

“How? He was kind of full of himself, but that wouldn’t be enough. Anna isn’t that picky. I wonder if he told her all the little secrets he told me.” She sighed. “Guess I was stupid for falling for that.”

“Secrets?”

“Yeah, little things he found during home inspections. There was an elderly woman who had a rodent infestation and hired some random off-the-grid guy to get rid of them instead of an exterminator, and he nearly burned the house down. I actually think the guy was from around here? Then there were people who had their pets stuffed and in their living rooms. That sort of thing.” She rolled her eyes. “Some of them are only really problems because of who they happened with.
